History of Puri / Puri History, Orissa

Even before the Aryans, the forested lands of Puri were inhabited by the Sabars, a Pre-Dravidian and Pre-Aryan tribe of the Austro-Asiatic family. In those days even the name for Puri was z i.e the place for tooth (Danta). It is said that the canine tooth of the Buddha was kept in the temple. The Dantosav of the Buddha used to be celebrated with a convoy of 3 chariots. Heresay that in those days a Buddhist Stupa used to stand there where the Jagannath Temple stands now. And after the construction of Math by Sankarcharya the revered Hindu reformer, the Hindu religion atlast registered the name of Puri.

Chilka Lake - Just 49 kms south of Puri, the Chilka Lake is one of the largest lakes in Asia, spread over 1,100 sq km. Familiar to the local people as Chilika means a land covered with water. One of the eastern banks of the Chilika lake is the spot for watching dolphins - the latest attractions to the visitors of Puri. Dolphins can also be seen at the jetty ghat in winter, when the migratory birds from home and abroad too arrive Satapada. It is visited by a large number of people especially the nature lovers. The stillness of the environs, joyful songs of the bird and stunning sunrise make everyone fall in love with the place.
